Does Insurance Cover ABA Therapy in Florida? What Parents Should Know

Understanding ABA Insurance Coverage Does Not Have to Be Complicated

If you are considering Applied Behavior Analysis, or ABA therapy, for your child, one of your first questions may be:

Will my insurance cover it?

For many Florida families, the answer may be yes. But the exact coverage, requirements, and out-of-pocket costs can depend on your specific insurance plan.

Florida has insurance requirements that apply to certain health plans and include coverage for ABA therapy for eligible individuals. However, not every insurance policy is governed by the same rules, which is why checking your individual benefits is so important.

At Evolving Minds Together, we work with families throughout Pembroke Pines, Orlando, Port St. Lucie, and surrounding communities to help make the process of starting ABA therapy easier to understand.

What Does ABA Insurance Coverage Usually Depend On?

Having health insurance does not automatically mean every ABA service will be covered in the same way.

Your benefits may depend on factors such as:

  • Your specific insurance plan

  • Whether your ABA provider is in network

  • Your child’s diagnosis and supporting documentation

  • Whether prior authorization is required

  • The type and amount of therapy determined to be medically necessary

  • Your deductible, copay, or coinsurance

  • Where services are provided

That is why two families with insurance through the same company can sometimes have different benefits.

The best way to know what applies to your child is to verify the details of your individual plan before services begin.

Will My Child Need a Diagnosis?

Many insurance plans require documentation supporting the medical necessity of ABA therapy.

Depending on the plan, this may include a diagnosis, diagnostic evaluation, referral, prescription, or other clinical records.

Requirements are especially important when seeking authorization for ABA services, so having copies of your child’s evaluations and medical information available can help make the process smoother.

If you are unsure what documentation you need, your ABA provider and insurance company can help explain the next steps.

What Is Prior Authorization?

Prior authorization is one of the most common insurance terms parents encounter when beginning ABA therapy.

It simply means that your insurance company must review and approve certain services before agreeing to cover them.

For ABA therapy, the process may include submitting:

  • Diagnostic information

  • An ABA assessment

  • A proposed treatment plan

  • Recommended therapy goals

  • The number or frequency of services being requested

Prior authorization does not necessarily happen only once. Depending on the insurance plan, updated information may need to be submitted periodically so that continued services can be reviewed.

What About Florida Medicaid?

Florida Medicaid covers medically necessary behavior analysis services for eligible Medicaid recipients under age 21. For adults 21 and older, certain behavior analysis services may be available through Florida’s iBudget Waiver.

For children receiving ABA through Florida Medicaid, the process generally includes a written order for behavior analysis services, a comprehensive diagnostic evaluation, selecting a provider, and receiving prior authorization before services begin.

Families enrolled in a Medicaid managed care plan should check with their specific plan to understand its provider network and authorization process.

*Please note: Evolving Minds Together is not currently able to accept Medicaid. We are actively working to expand our insurance participation and hope to be able to serve Medicaid families in the future. Please contact our team for our most current insurance and payment options.

Does TRICARE Cover ABA Therapy?

Yes. TRICARE covers ABA therapy for qualifying beneficiaries diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder through its Autism Care Demonstration.

The program includes an initial ABA assessment, treatment planning, authorization for services, ongoing progress measurements, and parent or caregiver participation. Continued services are periodically reviewed based on clinical necessity.

Evolving Minds Together is proud to support military families and works with TRICARE as one of our insurance options.

What Will I Have to Pay Out of Pocket?

Even when ABA therapy is covered by insurance, families may still have some financial responsibility.

Depending on your plan, this could include:

  • A deductible

  • Copays

  • Coinsurance

  • Out-of-network costs

Your deductible is the amount you may need to pay before certain insurance benefits begin. A copay is typically a fixed amount you pay for a covered service, while coinsurance is usually a percentage of the cost.

The exact amount varies significantly from plan to plan, so it is important to ask about your individual benefits rather than assuming another family’s experience will be the same as yours.

Questions to Ask Your Insurance Company

If you are calling your insurance company about ABA therapy, having a few questions ready can make the conversation much easier.

Consider asking:

  • Does my plan cover ABA therapy?

  • Is an autism diagnosis required?

  • Do I need a referral or prescription?

  • Is prior authorization required?

  • Is my ABA provider in network?

  • What are my deductible, copay, and coinsurance amounts?

  • Are there requirements for assessments or treatment plans?

  • Are there any restrictions based on where therapy takes place?

You can also ask your ABA provider what information they need from you to begin checking your benefits.
